About the Swedish Scientific Drilling Program

The Swedish Scientific Drilling Program (SSDP) aims to coordinate Swedish involvement in national and international research programs that probe the interior of the Earth using modern technologies, such as deep-sea riser drilling and in-situ multi-sensor logging. From a Swedish perspective, these infrastructures are available through multinational scientific drilling programs, such as the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) and the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). Scientific coordination and advice provided by SSDP will ensure that Swedish participation in these programs is effective and that the experience gained is transferred to the next generation of scientists. SSDP will guide Swedish scientists through the lifespan of a large-scale drilling project: i.e. from a conceptual idea to a realized drilling expedition, including the publication of the results and public outreach. Through annual workshops, representation at appropriate meetings and use of e-Science SSDP will integrate the continental and ocean Earth science communities in Sweden and ensure that there is suitable return on the investment that the Swedish Research Council (VR) has placed in IODP and ICDP.

SSDP structure

The SSDP secretariat is located at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University. Based on and with help of the experience from SDDP, we (see Contact) commence SSDP activities during 2013 while we are waiting for the approval (or not) of our application to VR for operational funding. An operational structure will be established and described here as soon as funding is secured.

How to get involved

You are a researcher and you want to solve a problem that can only be tackled by scientific drilling. Or you want to participate in this for your research very promising existing project (Swedish or not). You have a general interest in scientific drilling and want to learn more. Or you have a practical problem and want to come in contact with the right research infrastructure in Sweden. Then you have come to the right place - contact the SSDP secretariat!
